Amazon has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Statkraft for electricity from the Mossy Hill onshore wind farm near Lerwick in Shetland, Scotland. Under the agreement, Amazon will purchase 36 MW of renewable electricity from the project. Mossy Hill is expected to become operational in November 2030 and is projected to generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of more than 57,000 UK homes each year.
The Mossy Hill agreement is part of Amazon’s expanding portfolio of more than 50 carbon-free energy projects across the UK. Once these projects are fully operational, they are expected to represent more than 1 GW of carbon-free generation capacity, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of more than 1.3 million UK households. The PPA also gives Statkraft greater certainty to move the Mossy Hill project forward. Amazon’s renewable-energy investments in Scotland extend beyond Mossy Hill. Its portfolio includes PPAs for the Moray West offshore wind farm in the Moray Firth and the Chirmorie Wind Farm in South Ayrshire. Chirmorie is being developed by egg Power, Liberty Global’s renewable-energy infrastructure investment business, and will provide 90 MW of onshore wind capacity. Amazon describes the Chirmorie agreement as the UK's largest-ever onshore wind PPA.
The Mossy Hill project therefore represents both a renewable-energy procurement agreement for Amazon and a mechanism for supporting new generation capacity in Scotland. It forms part of Amazon’s broader UK investment programme, including its stated £40 billion UK investment commitment for 2025–2027, and its global objective under The Climate Pledge to achieve net-zero carbon across its operations by 2040.
