Nadara, Amazon Commission 227 MW Agrivoltaic Solar Plant in Sicily

Nadara has completed a 227 MW agrivoltaic solar project in partnership with Amazon in Sicily, Italy, with Amazon securing 156 MW under a power purchase agreement. 

Nadara, a NextGen Independent Power Producer (IPP+) operating across Europe and the US, has announced the completion of Big Fish, Italy’s largest agrivoltaic solar plant. The 227 MW project was developed under a 156 MW Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Amazon, strengthening an established partnership between the two companies that includes previous PPAs in Finland and Italy.

Located around 40 km from Mount Etna and spanning the municipalities of Catania, Lentini and Motta Sant’Anastasia, the Big Fish project was completed in 12 months with the involvement of more than 900 workers. Covering 400 hectares across 15 plots, the project incorporates an agrivoltaic design that retains half of the site for active agricultural use, demonstrating how utility-scale renewable energy generation can coexist with productive farmland.

Beyond supplying local communities with additional carbon-free electricity, the Big Fish project is expected to generate long-term economic and environmental benefits for the surrounding area. Over the plant’s lifetime, local municipalities will receive at least €17.25 million in energy-efficiency services and funding, supporting infrastructure improvements, public-building monitoring systems and electric vehicles for municipal operations. As part of its environmental initiatives, the project has also supported the planting of 38,000 trees and the maintenance of 2.5 km of public waterways. These measures underline Nadara’s focus on building long-term relationships with local communities and integrating community engagement into its renewable energy activities.
