Alcemi has secured planning approval for the development of a 500 MW (1000 MWh) energy storage project in Coalburn, Scotland. Working in partnership with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), through its Flagship Funds, the system will store energy from renewable sources during periods of excess generation and release it to the system during times of peak demand.
Alcemi chose the project site to support the national transmission system by limiting the impact of network constraints, making the UK power sector less carbon-intensive, and helping to reduce energy costs for consumers. The company, in close collaboration with local authorities and stakeholders, has undertaken extensive environmental impact assessments to achieve the highest sustainability and safety standards for the project. Moreover, the energy storage facility will promote biodiversity by maintaining peat reserves, planting trees and wildflowers, and constructing new habitats. The site will also reap the benefits of landscaping measures aimed at minimizing the visual impact.
Construction of the project can begin shortly after the final investment decision from CIP is made later this month. The energy system is expected to prevent the emission of 1.6 million tonnes of CO2 over the following 35 years.
