Centrica Plc has announced the inauguration of the 18 MW Codford solar power project, its first solar farm in the UK. The solar farm's construction began in April 2022 after Centrica Business Solutions secured consent in 2021. Comprised of 33,000 panels, the project in Wiltshire, England, generates 19 GWh of green electricity annually, which is enough to power approximately 4850 homes.
Centrica's goal of delivering 900 MW of low-carbon assets by 2026 was announced in late 2021. The company is pursuing battery storage schemes at various previous gas peaking plants, such as Brigg, Lincolnshire, and Knapton, North Yorkshire, as well as Ostend in Belgium, and has a multiple-gigawatt pipeline of projects.
Vodafone cooperated with Centrica by purchasing half of the solar farm's electricity, providing further renewable energy to the UK grid. Centrica's total energy requirement, which will come from UK-based renewable power sources, is projected to be about 47% by 2025, as per existing agreements.
