Meld Energy has selected Saltend Chemicals Park in Hull, UK, as the site for its 100 MW green hydrogen plant. The facility represents an investment between GBP180 million (US$224.8 million) and GBP240 million (US$299.7 million). The hydrogen produced would provide energy on-site at Saltend, enabling the reduction of carbon-intensive fuels and chemical feedstocks in favor of emissions-free green hydrogen.
Meld Energy is currently bidding for development support from the UK’s Net Zero Hydrogen Fund. If the bid wins government backing, Front End Engineering Design is expected to begin in November 2023, with concurrent planning application processes. Building would start less than a year later, with an expected target operation in early 2027.
The facility would have an initial capacity of 100 MW with the potential for capacity to exceed 200 MW in the second development stage. Meld Energy intends to utilize Power Purchase Agreements with renewable energy suppliers to supply the facility with energy.
