Centrica Business Solutions has secured the development rights to a 65 MW two-hour battery storage project located in Abernethy, Perthshire, Scotland.
The Abernethy site is ideally located near a connection for North Sea offshore wind farms and will aid in managing grid capacity through its ability to charge when demand for power is low and discharge when demand is high. Expected to be connected to the grid in 2028, the site's 65 MW two-hour battery capacity will store enough electricity to power 130,000 homes for an hour. This equates to a town the size of Aberdeen.
The project is one of two battery storage plants set to be delivered by Centrica, with the second site being a 30 MW facility located in Aberdeenshire. The Aberdeenshire site's battery capacity is set to go live in mid-2024.
