BP Plc and Aberdeen City Council have received approval from the local authority's planning committee for the first phase of the Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub in Scotland. The project aims to create a scalable, green hydrogen production, storage, and distribution facility that would be powered by renewable energy. The approval of the first phase means that the plans for this facility can now move forward.
The Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub is being delivered by a joint venture called bp Aberdeen Hydrogen Energy Limited (bpAHEL) which comprises BP and Aberdeen City Council. Phase one of this project is set to begin production in 2025. It aims to produce over 800 kilograms of green hydrogen per day, enough to support fueling 25 buses and a similar number of other fleet vehicles.
To bring the Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub project to life, the hydrogen production facility would be constructed on Hareness Road, while the solar farm would be built on the former Ness landfill site. The two facilities would be connected by an underground grid connection. This means that the energy produced from the renewable source could be efficiently transferred to the hydrogen production facility for use in the process.
