Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) and Masdar have signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for power generation from the 100 MW utility-scale Wind Programme in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
The purchase agreement entails harnessing energy from 22 wind turbines towering at a height of 95 m, boasting a wingspan of 155 m, which can generate power even at lower wind speeds. This project encompasses four different sites, with the main one being the 45 MW wind farm on Sir Bani Yas Island, alongside a 14 MWp (megawatt peak) solar farm. The remaining wind farms are located at historically significant sites such as the pearl-diving center in Delma Island (27MW), Al Sila (27MW), and Al Halah in Fujairah (4.5MW).
The UAE Wind Program is expected to power over 23,000 UAE homes a year. It will displace 120,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, equivalent of removing over 26,000 cars from the road annually.
