Chinese solar tracker manufacturer Arctech Solar Holding Co Ltd has been selected by Shanghai Electric Power Co to deliver its technology for an over 2-GW solar farm in Saudi Arabia.
The huge project will be equipped with Arctech’s SkyLine II solar tracking system, which is designed to withstand desert conditions and high winds up to 55 m/s. The Al Sadawi photovoltaic (PV) park will be installed in the Sadawi region of Saudi Arabia, in the country’s Eastern Province, covering roughly 40 square kilometers (15.4 square miles) of land. It should start feeding electricity into the Saudi grid in Q2 of 2027. The development rights for the Sadawi solar project were awarded in late 2024 to a consortium comprising UAE-based renewable energy firm Masdar, China’s GD Power, and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). The group secured the project through a successful bid in the fifth round of Saudi Arabia’s National Renewable Energy Programme (NREP), followed by the signing of a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC). Once operational, the solar facility is expected to generate over six billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, enough to meet the annual energy needs of approximately 700,000 households in Saudi Arabia. The plant’s performance and operations will be overseen using Arctech’s SCADA monitoring system.
