Southern Power, a U.S. wholesale energy provider and a subsidiary of Southern Company, announced the acquisition of two Solar facilities from EDF Renewables in Texas, USA.
Southern Power's expansion of its renewable energy portfolio includes acquiring the 200 MW Millers Branch Solar Facility in Haskell County, Texas, and the 150 MW South Cheyenne Solar Facility in Wyoming. These additions are part of Southern Power's comprehensive 5,280 MW renewable fleet, comprising 30 solar and 15 wind facilities either operational or under construction. Anticipated to begin commercial operations in the fourth quarter of 2025, the 200 MW facility will sell electricity and renewable energy credits under a 20-year virtual power purchase agreement (PPA) with Thermo Fisher Scientific.
This move aligns with Southern Power's strategy of reinforcing its wholesale business through the acquisition and development of generating assets, backed by long-term contracts with creditworthy partners while supporting Thermo Fisher Scientific in its net zero-by-2050 commitment.
