Cordia has announced that it has signed a binding agreement to acquire three microgrids and district energy systems from Essential Utilities, Inc. in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, USA.
The agreement encompasses three energy systems:
The Pittsburgh International Airport Microgrid is a facility enabling the airport to operate independently from the electric grid. It achieves this through a 21.25 MW natural gas power plant, enhancing PIT's resilience significantly.
The district energy system at Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Wexford Hospital, caters to all the heating, cooling, and primary power needs of the 160-bed hospital. This is facilitated by steam boilers, hot water boilers, chillers, and a 2.0 MW natural gas generator, ensuring uninterrupted power supply, including emergency backup.
The Allegheny County District Energy System is an infrastructure providing efficient and resilient steam and hot water services to six government buildings, including the Allegheny County Courthouse and the City-County Building. This is achieved through steam boilers and domestic water heaters.
Cordia's strategic acquisition expands its presence in Pittsburgh, where it operates energy systems in key areas. Developed by Essential subsidiary Peoples, these systems leverage natural gas to provide safer, more reliable, and resilient energy to critical institutions in the region. The transaction, subject to closing conditions and regulatory approvals, is anticipated to conclude in late 2023 or early 2024.
