The transaction involves AIMCo joining an investor consortium led by Equitix, alongside GCM Grosvenor, to acquire a 50% interest in Viridor Group, a leading UK energy-from-waste business, from existing shareholder KKR. Following the transaction, KKR retains the remaining 50% interest in Viridor, while the investor consortium holds a 50% co-control position. The investment brings together long-term infrastructure investors to support Viridor’s continued development and growth.
Viridor is the UK’s largest energy-from-waste platform and operates 12 facilities across the country, with two additional facilities under construction. The company provides essential waste-management infrastructure by processing residual waste that would otherwise require disposal and recovering energy from it. Its facilities contribute to the UK’s waste-management capacity and energy generation, positioning the business within the broader resource-recovery and energy-transition sectors. For Equitix, the transaction reinforces its infrastructure investment strategy and provides an opportunity to support an established essential-services business alongside KKR and Viridor’s management team. For AIMCo, the investment represents its first entry into the energy-from-waste sector, broadening its infrastructure portfolio and providing exposure to long-term contracted cash flows and potential business growth.
The investors were attracted by Viridor’s established market position, diversified operating footprint, long-term contracted revenues and inflation-linked cash flows. These characteristics can provide greater revenue predictability and resilience against inflation compared with businesses that rely on short-term contracts or volatile market prices. In addition, Viridor’s development pipeline offers opportunities to expand its operating capacity and strengthen its position in the UK energy-from-waste market.
