The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has approved the UK’s largest solar project in terms of power generation, the 800 MW Springwell Solar Farm with battery storage and supporting grid connection infrastructure in North Kesteven, Lincolnshire.
Springwell Energy Farm Limited filed the application in November 2024. The project was developed jointly by EDF power solutions and Luminous Energy. The solar farm covers approximately 4200 acres of good quality agricultural land and is expected to become operational by 2029. It will generates enough power per year to cover the needs of more than 180,000 homes.
Energy minister Michael Shanks said: “It is crucial we learn the lessons of the conflict in the Middle East – solar is one of the cheapest forms of power available and is how we get off the rollercoaster of international fossil fuel markets and secure our own energy independence."
SSE’s 31MW Littleton Solar Farm near Evesham, Worcestershire has now entered full operation following a two-year construction delivery programme.
