ACCIONA and Ørsted have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop solutions for the manufacturing of large-scale foundations for offshore wind projects. The main focus of the agreement is to create foundation models that can easily adapt to offshore wind turbines, considering the size and depths of the turbines. Both companies will evaluate mass-production construction solutions for floating concrete platforms and materials like bio-cement and bio-concrete. The main objective is to create a strong European supply chain that can support the continent's portfolio of floating wind energy projects.

Europe has set an ambitious target to reach 60 GW of installed offshore wind power by 2030 and 300 GW by 2050. This has made it crucial to collaborate and develop strategies that can support the achievement of these targets. In addition, the use of bio-cement and bio-concrete in construction projects is an emerging trend in the renewable energy sector. Bio-concrete, for example, is more sustainable than traditional concrete as it uses bacteria to bind the materials instead of cement.

This MOU is a significant step towards applying innovative solutions for the manufacturing of offshore wind projects in Europe and enhancing the use of sustainable materials for construction, which supports the goal of decreasing carbon footprints in the energy sector.
