Permit granted for 5.5 GW Offshore wind farm in Sweden

The County Administrative Board of Gotland is set to propose to the Swedish Government that a permit be granted for developing a 5.5 GW Aurora offshore wind farm within the country's exclusive economic zone.

The project is being developed by OX2 and Ingka Investments about 22 kilometers south of Gotland and more than 30 kilometers east of Öland in the Baltic Sea. The wind farm comprises 370 offshore wind turbines with hub heights of up to 370 m (1,214 ft). The offshore farm produces 24 TWh of electricity per year, the equivalent of the power usage of about 5 million households or about 17% of Sweden’s total electricity consumption.

If the Government gives approval, the first phase of the project could be operational by 2030 and deliver over 6TWh annually to South Sweden. The entire wind farm is expected to be developed by 2035.
