Planning application submitted for 2 GW Offshore wind farm in Sweden

Freja Offshore, a joint venture between Hexicon and Mainstream Renewable Power, has submitted an application to the Ministry of Climate and Enterprise to construct the 2 GW Cirrus offshore wind project in the southern Baltic Sea, approximately 50 km south-east of Karlskrona, in Sweden's economic zone.

The government will process the application and obtain input from several authorities in a consultation round before making a decision.

The connection of the Cirrus offshore wind farm to the power grid is planned to take place in price zone 4. Freja Offshore’s intention is to use bottom-fixed turbines for the wind farm but will explore the possibility of employing floating turbines for the deepest area. Once fully developed, the wind farm will be able to produce up to 10TWh annual electricity, enough to provide power to half a million homes in Blekinge, Skåne, Kalmar, Kronoberg, and Halland counties.

If approved, the Cirrus offshore wind farm could provide reliable and clean energy for the local community while contributing to Sweden's target of becoming carbon-neutral by 2045.
