The County Administrative Board of Gotland has granted a Natura 2000 permit for the 5.5 GW Aurora Offshore Wind farm located outside the islands of Gotland and Öland in Sweden.
The project is being developed by OX2 and Ingka Investments about 22 kilometers south of Gotland and more than 30 kilometers east of Öland in the Baltic Sea. The wind farm comprises 370 offshore wind turbines with hub heights of up to 370 m (1,214 ft). The offshore farm produces 24 TWh of electricity per year, the equivalent of the power usage of about 5 million households or about 17% of Sweden’s total electricity consumption.
Natura 2000 is one of several permits that need to be in place. The next step is for the County Administrative Board to propose to the government that the wind farm can be built according to the Act of Sweden’s exclusive economic zone. If the government approves, construction can start already in 2028 and production can start before 2030.
OX2 and Ingka Investments have submitted a permit application under the act of Sweden’s Exclusive Economic Zone to construct the 3.1 GW offshore energy hub Neptunus off the coast of Blekinge, in the south of Sweden.
