Commercial operation begins for 342 MW Offshore wind farm in Germany

RWE has started the commercial operation of its 342 MW Kaskasi offshore wind farm located about 35 km north of the island of Heligoland in the North Sea, Germany. 

Since the end of 2022, all of the 38 wind turbines of the project have been feeding green electricity into the grid.  After all required tests were successfully completed, the wind farm is now commencing regular operation. The approval procedure for the wind farm started in the spring of 2019 and construction was greenlighted by the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie) at the end of 2020.

The project represents around EUR800 million (US$862.12 million) of investment. The project features 38 pieces of the SG 8.0-167 DD Flex turbines with a rotor diameter of 167 m using the 81 m long Siemens Gamesa B81 Integral Blades. It supplies enough electricity to power the equivalent of more than 400,000 average German households.
