Amprion GmbH has initiated the planning approval process for the BorWin4 offshore link, which aims to connect North Sea wind farms to the German onshore transmission grid, with a capacity of 900 MW. The process commenced after the submission of all necessary documentation for the converter platform BorWin delta and the 90-km submarine cable system.
The BorWin4 project will be constructed in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the German North Sea. Amprion anticipates receiving planning approval by early 2024, with the cable laying set to commence in 2027. The start of the planning approval process is a critical step as Amprion aims to put BorWin4 into operation a year earlier than the original target date of 2029.
The BorWin4 project is a crucial development in Germany's efforts to achieve its renewable energy targets, particularly in offshore wind energy. The project will enable the transfer of large amounts of electricity generated from offshore wind farms to the German grid, reducing the nation's dependence on fossil fuels and improving its energy security.
