TotalEnergies and Veolia have signed an agreement to co-develop the world's largest solar photovoltaic (PV) project that will supply electricity to the Sharqiyah Desalination plant in the city of Sur, Oman. This plant provides potable water to more than 600,000 people living in the Sharqiyah region.
This solar project, which will have an output of 17 megawatts peak (MWp), will be the first of its kind to be constructed in the area. It is capable of preventing close to 300,000 tons of CO2 emissions each year as a result of its production of more than 30,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of environmentally friendly electricity annually, which is more than a third of the desalination plant's daily consumption.
In order to maximize the amount of energy that can be generated by the facility, it will be equipped with more than 32,000 high-efficiency solar panels and an East-West tracker system. The system spreads over an area of 130,000 square meters, which is roughly equivalent to 18 football fields.
