TotalEnergies has launched the construction of a 25 MW/75 MWh battery storage project in Belgium. The system will be installed at its Antwerp refinery, making it the company's most significant battery project in Europe. The facility's 40 Intensium Max High Energy lithium-ion batteries will be supplied by Saft.
The project will help to quickly integrate more renewable electricity into the grid, a significant move considering the current need to find effective ways to balance the national grid systems and the growing demand for performance, and consistency of power supply.
By the end of 2024, the Antwerp project will become operational and will play an essential role in smoothing the power fluctuations in the national grid, especially in the peak winter periods; ensuring grid reliability by actively engaging in the national grid's reserve services; and facilitating the integration of more renewable power sources into the grid.
