Utility-scale battery developer Giga Storage has hired Sweco to design 700 MW/2,800 MWh Green Turtle battery parks to be built on the site of a former zinc processing plant in the Dilsen-Stokkem municipality in the eastern province of Limburg, Belgium.
The battery pack will store excess wind or solar energy when it is generated, making that renewable energy available to the grid during peak demand periods. Sweco, a consulting engineering firm based in Stockholm, will design the civil and electrical engineering aspects of the battery energy storage system (BESS). Green Turtle is one of five additional projects Giga Storage is developing across the Netherlands and Belgium. Construction is scheduled to start in summer 2025, with the battery park expected to be completed by 2028.
