Wärtsilä has commissioned the 24 MW/48 MWh Giga Buffalo battery energy storage, co-located with wind and solar assets at the Wageningen University & Research test center in Lelystad, in the province of Flevoland in the Netherlands.
The GIGA Buffalo battery offers Eneco, the developer of the project, the energy capacity required to mitigate intermittency from renewables, manage electricity frequency, and increase grid dependability. It also increases revenue by optimizing the value of renewable assets and providing dispatchable capacity during periods of peak demand.
The project features Wärtsilä’s Gridsolv Quantum and GEMS Digital Energy Platform.
