Saipem has been awarded an engineering services contract by Synhelion AG to carry out pre-FEED (pre-Front-End Engineering Design) activities for a new commercial-scale synthetic fuel plant at RWE’s Chemiepark Knapsack site in Hürth, Germany.

The facility is planned to produce approximately 30,000 tonnes per year of RED-compliant renewable synthetic fuels. Its main output will be Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), alongside synthetic diesel and gasoline for the aviation, maritime and road transport sectors.

Saipem will prepare a multidisciplinary pre-FEED engineering package to establish the overall configuration of the plant. The work will integrate Synhelion’s proprietary synthetic-fuel technology and fuel synthesis and upgrading processes with the existing site infrastructure provided by RWE. The engineering package will support the project's permitting process, provide the basis for the subsequent FEED phase, and ultimately contribute to the Final Investment Decision (FID).
