RWE and the Westfalen Group have announced a partnership to jointly develop green hydrogen fuel stations in Germany for hydrogen-powered vehicles. The joint venture aims to build up to 70 hydrogen fuel stations by 2030, with a focus on commercial vehicles in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony. Logistics firms in the respective regions will be involved in the expansion.
The first hydrogen fuel station will be located at the RWE Emsland gas-fired power station and will be operational by 2024. The joint venture will install a 14 MW pilot electrolyzer to produce green hydrogen for the fuel and filling station.
Antitrust reviews of the planned cooperation will decide if RWE and Westfalen will be able to establish their joint venture before the end of the year. The German automotive industry has shown great interest in fuel cell vehicles powered by green hydrogen, and this joint venture will allow for green hydrogen refueling infrastructure that will be essential for cleaner transport in Germany.
