Rezolv Energy has commissioned the 225 MW St. George Solar Park in Silistra, Bulgaria. The project was completed rapidly, achieving full commercial operation in less than three years after Rezolv acquired the development rights. Constructed on a 165-hectare brownfield site formerly occupied by Silistra Airport, the solar park is expected to remain in operation for at least 30 years.
With an overall investment of about US$300 million, the St. George project includes nearly 400,000 photovoltaic panels and is expected to produce approximately 313 GWh of electricity each year. The development also incorporates a 90 MW / 240 MWh battery energy storage system backed by funding from the European Union’s NextGenerationEU programme. The battery installation is designed to improve grid flexibility and stability by storing electricity generated during periods of high solar output and supplying it when demand is higher.
The St. George project was developed in collaboration with several prominent Bulgarian and international partners. Sofia-based Solarpro, recognised as a leading technology integrator in Eastern Europe, together with CMC Europe, served as the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractors. Bulgarian firm Green Solar Energy was responsible for carrying out the high-voltage infrastructure works necessary for connecting the project to the national grid. The project’s development was supported by a long-term Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) signed with Ardagh Glass Packaging-Europe (AGP-Europe), part of the Ardagh Group. Under the agreement — among the first VPPAs implemented in Bulgaria — AGP-Europe will receive 110 GWh of renewable electricity annually over a 12-year term. Financing for the construction phase included €90 million in debt funding provided by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Raiffeisen Bank International.
