The Polish state-owned power firm PGE Group has plans to construct a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of at least 200 MW/820 MWh. The project has secured the first license commitment for electricity storage in Poland.
The storage system will be linked to the existing 716 MW Żarnowiec pumped-storage power plant. The Żarnowiec plant is situated approximately 10 km from the Baltic Sea, and it will contribute to the stabilization of the integration of renewable energy sources. These sources include PGE's own solar farms, as well as onshore and offshore wind parks. The hybrid system will be able to provide power for at least five hours to about 200,000 homes.
PGE is looking to secure money from the European Union as well as partners to help co-finance the investment in order to carry out the project.
