Lafarge has signed a 10-year virtual power purchase agreement with RWE Supply & Trading to cover 20% of its energy needs in Poland. The green energy will come from Windfarm Polska III, with a total capacity of 132 MW.
The agreement marks an important step towards Lafarge's commitment to source 100% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030. The company has also taken steps to develop its photovoltaic capacity, with a 41 MW project in Wierzbica and the installation of solar panels on its office buildings.
Windfarm Polska III, which was commissioned in 2021, is owned by the German utility Stadtwerke Muenchen and uses equipment and services from Vestas. RWE Supply & Trading has already contracted 180 GWh of power supply from the facility to local customers in the construction sector.
Overall, Lafarge's agreement with RWE Supply & Trading represents a significant development in the Polish renewable energy sector. As the demand for sustainable energy continues to grow, it is likely that companies will be using virtual power purchase agreements to help them achieve their climate goals.
