Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has announced that the company is investing in a floating wind technology start-up, TouchWind.

Through its investment in TouchWind, MOL will advance technology development for practical wind turbine applications. The company's objective is to explore business opportunities within the supply chain of next-generation floating offshore wind turbines across Europe, Japan, and other Asian regions.

TouchWind is currently developing a one-piece rotor wind turbine with a tilting angle, designed to mitigate wind interference commonly encountered in large wind farms. This innovation is anticipated to enhance overall wind farm power generation efficiency. Additionally, its unique design allows these turbines to operate effectively in strong winds while reducing the weight of both the wind turbine and its floating components. Consequently, it is expected to improve the equipment's utilization rate and economics over its lifecycle.

With support from Dutch government grants and collaborating companies, TouchWind has successfully demonstrated the technology's principles. They have constructed a wind turbine featuring a 6-meter diameter rotor and initiated demonstration testing at a lake facility in the Netherlands.
