Ilmatar has officially commissioned its first large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), named Ainola, at the Piiparinmäki wind farm in North Ostrobothnia, Finland, with a capacity of 30 MW and storage of 41 MWh.
The system, which began commercial operation on 18 June 2025, is among Finland’s largest storage units directly co-located with a renewable energy asset and is designed to operate for at least 15 years. Ilmatar retains a 10 % stake and oversees optimization, technical and commercial asset management, and electricity trading in day-ahead and intraday markets, with plans to enter reserve/frequency regulation markets pending approval. Majority ownership is held by Nuveen Infrastructure (formerly Glennmont Partners), which took over the wind farm in 2019. This pioneering project enhances grid stability, supports renewable energy integration, and establishes replicable frameworks for future storage developments across Finland and Sweden.
Neoen SA successfully commissioned its 55.8 MW Lumivaara wind farm in the municipality of Hyrynsalmi, Kainuu region, Finland.
