Iberdrola Australia has purchased the rights to a 1 GW wind project in Queensland, as part of a broader green energy growth strategy. The agreement is for the Mt James wind farm project, which was started by North Queensland Renewable Energy Zone (NQREZ). The Australian company estimated that the project would cost AUD2 billion (US$1.48 billion) when it first pitched it in 2020.
The transaction's financial specifics were kept under wraps.
The proposed wind park will be developed at Hughenden, in Queensland's North West Minerals Province, near a new transmission line that will be erected in the area. The original proposal was for roughly 200 turbines to be installed.
Iberdrola has already filed a development application for the site, requesting approval for Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation.
