Hokkaido Railway Co has started the construction of a 1.4 MW solar photovoltaic farm at its unused Sorachi driving center site.

The JPY400 million (US$3.7 million) solar scheme uses 31,900 sq m (343,368 sq ft) of land in Hokkaido, Japan. It is expected to generate more than 2.13 million kWh, enough to meet the annual electricity demand of 481 local homes.

Hokkaido Electric Power Company will purchase power generated by the plant at a tariff of JPY18/kWh (US$0.2/kWh) for 20 years.

Hokkaido Railway Co scheduled project completion in December 2019 and commercial operation by spring 2020.
