Haizea Completes Delivery of Record XXL Monopiles for Hornsea 3

Haizea Wind Group has delivered a batch of XXL monopile foundations for the 2.9 GW Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm in the UK. The monopiles were manufactured at Haizea’s facility at the Port of Bilbao, Spain, and are described by the company as the largest ever manufactured in Southern Europe. Each monopile is more than 105 metres long, 11 metres in diameter and weighs over 2,300 tonnes. The structures are also the largest manufactured in the Iberian Peninsula and among the biggest monopiles produced anywhere in Europe.

The delivery involved a complex port logistics operation. Grúas Aguado provided logistics support at Bilbao, while Cadeler handled the load-out and load-in operations. Mammoet transported the massive foundations within the port using self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs). Haizea and Dajin Heavy Industry are supplying the XXL monopiles for Hornsea 3, with Cadeler’s Wind Ally vessel responsible for installing them offshore. Installation activities began in May 2026.

Hornsea 3 is being developed approximately 120 km off the coast of Norfolk in the North Sea. The project will feature 197 Siemens Gamesa SG 14-236 DD turbines, each rated at 14 MW excluding power boost. Once operational, the project is expected to have a capacity of 2.9 GW and generate enough renewable electricity to supply more than 3.3 million UK homes. It is expected to enter operation in 2027.

The project is owned by Ørsted and Apollo-managed funds, with Mubadala Investment Company having recently joined the ownership structure. Hornsea 3 is expected to become the world’s largest single offshore wind farm when operational, highlighting the growing scale of foundations, turbines and installation equipment required for next-generation offshore wind projects.
