SSE Renewables has submitted a Section 36C Consent Variation Application to the Scottish Government to revise its consent for the 96MW Tangy Repower wind farm project in Argyll and Bute, Scotland.

Located approximately 9 km northwest of Campbeltown on the west coast of the Kintyre Peninsula in Argyll and Bute, the existing 22-turbine, 18.7MW Tangy Wind Farm opened in 2003 but is now approaching the end of its operational life. In 2019, SSE Renewables received consent from the Scottish Government’s Energy Consents Unit to repower the existing site with a new 16-turbine wind farm and associated energy infrastructure. However, rising supply chain costs and manufacturers discontinuing the originally proposed replacement turbine model have made it unfeasible to deliver the project in its approved form.

SSE Renewables has therefore submitted proposals to amend the 2019 consent and enable the development of a new 96MW wind farm at the Tangy Repower site. The increased generating capacity would be achieved through the use of newer, more efficient turbines with tip heights of up to 200 metres, together with minor adjustments to the site layout. The consent variation application follows an extensive programme of community engagement conducted by the Tangy Repower project team with statutory stakeholders, community councils and residents. The engagement included public exhibitions held across South Kintyre in August 2025 and March 2026.

Beyond the substantial employment opportunities and potential benefits for local contractors and service providers during construction, independent research by BiGGAR Economics, commissioned by SSE and submitted alongside the consent variation application, indicates that Tangy Repower could generate economic benefits worth several million pounds for both Scotland and Argyll and Bute.

If the project receives consent and proceeds, SSE plans to establish a Community Benefit Fund worth up to £480,000 annually, which would be distributed among local community groups and initiatives. The fund would build on SSE’s existing support for the region, with more than £300,000 already provided through the current Tangy Wind Farm over the past 23 years. This support has included funding for the Argyll, Lomond and the Islands Energy Agency (ALIenergy), helping deliver initiatives focused on affordable warmth, reducing fuel poverty, education and skills development, as well as affordable warmth advice services.
