Genex Power has commissioned the 50 MW and 100 MWh Bouldercombe Battery Project near Rockhampton in Queensland, Australia. The government referred to the battery as 'Big Bessie' and it will provide ancillary services that support the transmission network for the electricity supply of over 5 million Queenslanders. The state's Energy and Jobs Plan is behind the innovative installation.
Genex Power claimed that the project would help transform how energy supply and demand are managed during critical periods. The choice of location, between the North Queensland renewable area and the load centers of Gladstone and the South, was made based on the area's rich source of resources.
In March 2023, Tesla supplied 40 Megapack units specifically for the Bouldercombe Battery Project. Installation of the battery will help promote a more sustainable future for Queensland's energy industry and minimize the effects of peak demand.
