The Sea Fern Consortium, which includes Simply Blue Group, Subsea 7, and Spark Renewables, has announced plans to build a 2 GW offshore wind project in the Australian Pacific Ocean. The consortium aims to win rights to develop offshore wind energy projects in the Hunter region of New South Wales. The Hunter region was officially declared suitable for offshore wind development by the Australian government on July 12.
According to the Australian government, the Hunter region can support up to 5 GW of wind energy projects, which could power around 4.2 million homes. However, the consortium is currently at the inception phase of applying for a feasibility license under the Australian Offshore Electricity Infrastructure Act 2021. This seven-year license enables the consortium to pursue necessary technical, environmental, and social impact studies for the proposals.
The consortium emphasized its commitment to supporting local communities in the Hunter region.
