Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) has announced its involvement in the development of the Western Green Energy Hub (WGEH) in Western Australia. The project, which is being developed by a consortium consisting of Intercontinental Energy, CWP Global and the Mirning Traditional Lands Aboriginal Corporation, will entail the installation of 50 GW of renewable energy, including 3,000 wind turbines and 2.5 million solar panels, across 15,000sq km of land. This will produce an estimated 3.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen or 20 million tonnes of green ammonia annually, necessitating the installation of 25-35 GW of electrolysers.

The Mirning people have provided the land for the project in the sparsely populated Goldfields-Esperance region of southeast Western Australia, where the consortium is currently examining the viability of the wind and solar resources. The FID on the project is anticipated to be arrived at in 2027, with a completion timeline of up to 20 years. The project is predicted to require AUD75-100 billion (US$50-67 billion) in total.
