Origin Energy has secured an AUD45 million (USD 28.7 million) commitment from the New South Wales government to advance the development of a commercial-scale green hydrogen manufacturing hub on Kooragang Island near Newcastle, Australia.

Led by Origin Energy, the Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub project aims to deploy about 55 MW of electrolyzer capacity by 2026, with plans to expand to over 1 GW within the next decade. The initial phase is anticipated to produce 5,500 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, primarily for use at Orica’s ammonia manufacturing facility on Kooragang Island.

Additionally, hydrogen will be supplied for refueling hydrogen-powered buses and trucks at the hub. Construction is set to commence in 2025, with hydrogen production slated to start in 2026.
