250 MW/250 MWh energy storage project commissioned in Australia

AGL has announced the opening of its 250 MW/250 MWh 1-hour-duration battery system in Torrens Island Power Station in South Australia. Positioned just north of Adelaide, the battery is now the second-largest operational battery in the country. Its primary purpose is to support the reliability of renewables in South Australia, playing a crucial role in the region's transformation towards sustainable energy sources.

While currently sized at one hour of storage, the battery has the potential to extend its duration to four hours, reaching 1,000 MWh. This flexibility will greatly enhance the stability and reliability of the grid, ensuring a smooth transition towards a more sustainable energy future.

Initially, the battery will operate in grid-following mode, but it is expected to transition to grid-forming mode, known as virtual synchronous generation, in the near future.
