Fugro has been awarded the contract to conduct an offshore geotechnical site investigation for the 2.2 GW Star of the South (SOTS) offshore wind project in Australia. The wind farm, located off the coast of Gippsland in southeast Australia, is currently in the feasibility phase and is partly funded by the Victorian Government through the Energy Innovation Fund. The project aims to provide clean energy to around 1.2 million homes and cater to around 20% of Victoria's energy requirements.
The SOTS decision to award both the geophysical and geotechnical contracts to Fugro is attributed to Fugro’s ability to acquire high-quality geophysical and geotechnical data and deliver on an exceptional Health Safety, Security, and Environment record. Once completed, the project will have a significant impact on Victoria’s energy sector, reducing carbon emissions, and providing clean energy to the local community. The offshore geotechnical site investigation by Fugro is a crucial step in advancing the project’s feasibility plan.
As energy transitions inch towards sustainable forms of energy, project developments such as the Star of the South are critical in driving Victoria and Australia's green energy goals. Being in the feasibility phase, the project will undergo tests and investigations to ascertain the technical and economic viability of the project, and the information obtained is critical to securing funding and investors for the project.
