Final investment decision made for 700 MW Energy storage project in Australia

Origin Energy Limited has made a final decision to invest around AUD600 million (US$401.5 million) in the first phase of the Eraring battery energy storage project in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. The investment decision is expected to enable the construction of the 460 MW capacity, which is expected to go live in Q4 of 2025. However, the project has the potential to expand to a 700 MW capacity with a dispatch duration of four hours at a later date. The NSW Department of Planning and Environment granted initial planning permission for the Eraring battery project in May 2022.

Origin Energy Limited has already signed agreements for the supply and construction of the battery with works expected to start within weeks. They will utilize Enerven to provide design and construction services while the battery equipment will be supplied by Wärtsilä. The first phase of the Eraring battery project in Australia is forecast to have a dispatch duration of two hours.

This investment supports Origin Energy Limited's commitment to supporting Australia's national energy transition and making the transition to cleaner energy. Incorporating a large-scale battery storage system will help aid the grid's stability and lower reliance on fossil fuels.
