GMR Energy has begun working on the construction of a 240 MWp/480 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Australia.
The project has already received its respective development and connection approvals, and GMR Energy has signed an agreement with transmission network provider AusNet to construct the necessary grid connection infrastructure for the battery. The AUD330 million (US$221 million) project will fund via debt and equity financed. It will generate power equivalent to the consumption of 40,000 Australian homes.
The battery system, positioned beside AusNet’s existing Tyabb substation, will support the shift towards the usage of renewables in energy by balancing peak and off-peak periods. GMR Energy is partnering with AusNet to begin early work and acquire long-lead items. Gaw Capital Partners, a GMR Energy shareholder, is supporting the early works. Final talks with the EPC contractor for the BESS facility are also underway, with completion expected by late 2024.
