ARENA awards AUS$45mn for 200 MW energy storage project in Australia

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has awarded AUS$45 million (US$28.3 million) to Hydrostor Inc., through its partnership with Energy Estate (A-CAES NSW Pty), for the 200 MW/1600 MWh Silver City Energy Storage Centre in Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia.

Silver City will be able to store enough renewable energy to power up to 200,000 homes for 8 hours during times of high demand. This will give people in the remote mining community of Broken Hill access to safe, low-cost electricity.

More than 11 million metric tons of carbon dioxide will be displaced over the lifetime of Silver City, which is equivalent to the annual emissions of around 50,000 cars.
