Engie Energía Perú, a subsidiary of Engie, has been granted the definitive concession by Peru’s Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) to build the 300 MW Hanaqpampa solar power project in southern Peru. The project received Environmental Impact Statement approval in October 2021, and Engie received a temporary concession in February 2021 to develop feasibility studies for the plant. The Hanaqpampa plant is located in the district of El Algarrobal, province of Ilo.
Peru is aiming to develop 4.7 GW of solar PV capacity that will be integrated into the country's National Interconnected Electric System by the end of 2028. As of the end of 2021, solar made up approximately 2% of Peru’s installed capacity, with around 290 MW. The country currently has over 4 GW of solar projects under development. Engie Energía Perú already operates eight generation plants in Peru, with a total capacity of 2,496 MW distributed across four regions: Lima, Moquegua, Pasco, and Ancash.
The development of the Hanaqpampa solar power plant marks an important step for Peru in achieving its renewable energy goals. The country has significant potential for solar energy, with a high level of solar irradiation in many areas. The government has been actively promoting the development of solar and other renewable energy sources, with the goal of reducing reliance on fossil fuels and increasing energy security. The addition of the Hanaqpampa plant will bring Peru closer to meeting its renewable energy targets and reducing its carbon footprint.
