Virginia's State Corporation Commission (SCC) is yet to give their approval for the development of the 12 MW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind scheme. Dominion Energy, the project owner, is seeking for their go signal at the moment.
The project is comprised of two 6 MW turbines on a 2,135-acre (864-ha) site, adding up a total capacity of 12 MW. The electricity generated by the turbines could power about 300 households. It will be located off the coast of Virginia Beach.
A final ocean floor mapping is vital before the construction of the facility. The development of the wind park will provide significant consequences for the development of an adjacent wind lease area of 112,800 acres that could accommodate uo to 2,000 MW of turbines. The lease is currently held by Dominion Energy.
Upon securing regulatory approvals, construction will begin in 2019. Operation is scheduled before 2020 ends.
