The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has begun a federal review process for an offshore wind project that would install 200 wind turbines off Virginia’s coast.
The project is owned by Dominion Energy and would be the first commercial attempt of its kind of the state’s coastline. The project is approximately 27 miles from Virginia Beach, adjacent to the 12 MW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind demo facility. With a total capacity of 2,640 MW, the offshore wind park could provide enough electricity to power 660,000 homes.
The process will start with a 30-day public comment period and is expected to last about two years.
