Cubico Sustainable Investments has secured development consent for its Frodsham Solar project in Cheshire, England, marking a major milestone in the development of new renewable energy infrastructure. The decision was granted on 27 October 2026 by the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. The project, being developed by Frodsham Solar Limited, will combine a ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) array with a battery energy storage system (BESS).
Located on Frodsham Marsh, north of the town of Frodsham, the project is designed to generate approximately 147 MW of solar power, supported by a battery storage system with a capacity of around 100 MW. It will connect to the existing Frodsham substation operated by SP Energy Networks, allowing renewable electricity to be exported to the local distribution network. The project is expected to supply enough electricity to meet the annual needs of approximately 40,000 homes, supporting regional energy security and the transition to low-carbon power.
The solar farm will be located alongside the existing Frodsham Wind Farm and Protos energy hub, within an area that is developing into a centre for clean energy and industrial decarbonisation. Integrating solar generation and battery storage will help strengthen the region’s renewable energy infrastructure. The proposals also include environmental improvements, new public access routes and a community benefit fund intended to support local initiatives.
