The California Energy Commission (CEC) has approved the development of up to 5 gigawatts (GW) of floating offshore wind power by 2030 and 25 GW by 2045.
The CEC is mandated by AB 525, which was passed into state law in September 2021, to establish planning targets for clean energy technology. AB 525 also directs the CEC to collaborate with other agencies and stakeholders to develop a comprehensive strategic plan for offshore wind development by June 30, 2023. This plan must include transmission, port infrastructure, procurement, additional call areas, workforce development, and a sustainable supply chain.
