Ignitis Renewables has commenced full commercial operations of the 314 MW Kelmė wind energy project in Lithuania.
The Kelmė wind farm stands as the largest onshore wind facility in both Lithuania and the broader Baltic region. With an installed capacity of 314 MW, it represents a significant advancement in the country's electricity production and a major step forward in the evolution of Lithuania's energy infrastructure. The wind farm is expected to produce enough electricity to supply around 250,000 homes, comparable to meeting the entire electricity demand of the Kaunas district. Situated in the Kelmė district, the project highlights the area's growing importance as a key centre for renewable energy development in Lithuania.
The Kelmė wind farm was developed in two phases. The first phase, which became commercially operational in April 2025, involved the installation of 16 wind turbines with a combined capacity of 114 MW. The second phase, now entering commercial operation, added another 28 turbines, contributing an additional 200 MW. In total, the wind farm now includes 44 turbines, each with a capacity of around 7 MW and reaching heights of up to 240 meters, making them the most powerful turbines ever installed in Lithuania. The Nordex N163/6.X model was chosen for its high energy output and compatibility with the site’s environmental conditions. The overall investment in the project, covering both acquisition and construction expenses, is estimated at around EUR 550 million (US$ 628 million).
