Ignitis Renewables has received a positive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) decision from Lithuania's Environmental Protection Agency for the 700 MW Curonian Nord offshore wind farm, located in the Baltic Sea approximately 37 km off the Lithuanian coast, enabling the project to advance to the remaining permitting and development stages.
Curonian Nord wind farm will cover an area of about 120 square kilometres in the Baltic Sea and will be positioned at least 37 km away from the Lithuanian coast. It is estimated that the 700-MW wind farm could generate around 3 TWh of green electricity per year.
The EIA was conducted in compliance with the legal requirements of the Republic of Lithuania and applicable international standards. The assessment examined the project's potential effects on the marine ecosystem, biodiversity, fisheries, landscape, public health, and other environmental and social aspects. As part of the EIA process, comprehensive environmental studies were undertaken, consultations were held with local communities and stakeholders, and close coordination with regulatory authorities ensured that the project aligns with both national and international environmental obligations.
The EIA decision establishes the environmental foundation needed for the project to move forward with its remaining development and permitting processes, marking another significant milestone toward the realization of Lithuania's largest offshore wind project. Following this approval, the project will proceed with the outstanding development and regulatory activities required under the terms of its development permit, with the construction permit anticipated to be secured in 2027.
